Robinson's lead undisputed, but newcomer Thomas gains momentum

RALEIGH, N.C. — On Thursday, polling results from Capen Analytics shed new light on the upcoming Republican gubernatorial primary election. The data reveals an intriguing development in the race, with political newcomer Jesse Thomas gaining notable traction among likely Republican primary voters.

In a survey conducted between September 1-9, 2023, Capen Analytics found that Thomas, who has never held elected office and announced his candidacy less than one month prior to the survey's commencement, secured 7% support among respondents. While this impressive showing signifies the potential for a fresh face in the race, frontrunner Lt. Governor Mark Robinson underscored his commanding lead of the upcoming primary.

Robinson continues to dominate the field with a 49-percentage point lead over Mark Walker, securing an impressive 61% of likely Republican primary voters' support to Walker’s 12%. Alongside them, retired health care executive Jesse Thomas, former state Senator Andy Wells, and state Treasurer Dale Folwell collectively maintain 12% support.

Another key takeaway from the survey is the limited number of undecided voters, with only 15% remaining uncertain about their choice as Primary Election Day approaches. This suggests a relatively predictable election outcome at this stage, barring any major unforeseen events or developments.

David Capen, the pollster and president of Capen Analytics, commented on the significance of these findings, stating, “Our latest polling data paints a vivid picture of the Republican primary landscape, showcasing the noteworthy rise of political newcomer Jesse Thomas and the steadfast lead maintained by Mark Robinson. With less than 6 months before primary election day, the ball is in the court of Mark Walker and other challengers to craft their strategies in a way that will expand their base of support.”

As the Primary Election Day looms closer, candidates and political observers will be closely watching the evolving dynamics of the race. Capen Analytics remains available to provide accurate and timely polling data to inform voters, stakeholders, and the media.
